Job Summary

Assists in providing responsive and comprehensive general legal services to the University community under the supervision of the Chief Legal Affairs Officer.

Responsibilities
  1. Focuses on a wide array of commercial transactions, including contracting, procurement, intellectual property, technology licensing and commercialization, corporate sponsorships and data privacy and protection
  2. Works on issues including but not limited to public safety, grants, donor requests and bequests, student issues, open records requests, and others as assigned
  3. Develops practical solutions that meet client needs
  4. May be assigned to a specialty areas of expertise as needed
  5. Assist with providing advice and guidance to the Office of Research on various matters, including intellectual property, drafting, reviewing, and advising on sponsored research contracts and grant agreements, and other research-related agreements


Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Juris Doctorate or the equivalent from a school or college of law accredited by the American Bar Association

Other Required Qualifications
Current unrestricted license to practice law in Georgia; Current, valid, and unrestricted Georgia driver's license

Required Experience
Five (5) to Seven (7) years relevant experience practicing law. Position title (Assistant Legal Counsel or Associate Legal Counsel) will be commensurate with years of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as legal counsel at an institution of higher education or other public entity

Experience in the practice of law in commercial transactions, procurement and contracting for a public entity

Evidence of a strong academic record

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES
Ability to conduct legal research using analytical skills and excellent judgement; Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a large complex organization; Able to handle multiple tasks or projects at one time meeting assigned deadlines

KNOWLEDGE
Evidence of a strong academic record; Has a familiarity with a broad range of legal issues that arise in a public higher education setting; Demonstrated ability to perform duties with a high level of professionalism, accountability, discretion, judgment, accuracy, diplomacy and tact

SKILLS
Self-motivated, independent team player; Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills; Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e. Microsoft Office suite); Strong attention to detail and follow up skills
