Position Description
Provides leadership and administration within a college or school, in accordance with established guidelines, university policy and/or governmental regulations.

Provides leadership and administration within a college or school, in accordance with established guidelines, university policy and/or governmental regulations.

The Associate Dean for Research is responsible for leading the Schools efforts to achieve this objective. The Associate Dean acts as the chief research officer of the School and provides direction for and oversight of its research and innovation enterprises and for fostering opportunities for faculty and students to engage in research.

Responsibilities of the position:
  • Serve on the Deans Executive Leadership Council to provide direction and decision making support for all aspects of the School
  • Identify and disseminate opportunities for faculty to engage in and submit proposals to support extramurally supported research
  • Facilitate, and when appropriate, lead center-type research grant proposals
  • Provide oversight for assignment of laboratory space assignment and reassignment
  • Develop plans and business models for effective and efficient use of equipment in a shared use, fee-for-service model
  • Contribute to activities necessary to receive accreditation from the AVMA COE, and other regulatory or accreditation approvals and reports such as the Texas Higher Education
  • Coordinating Board and AAALAC
  • Serve as the graduate student coordinator
  • Serve as the Schools chief research officer
  • Engage and develop productive relationships with TTU programmatic and compliance offices pertinent to the Schools research and innovation enterprises such as the Office of Research & Innovation, Graduate School, Environmental Health & Safety, and Animal Care Services.
  • Activities resulting from this engagement might include, for example:
    • Facilitate workshops for faculty such as grant writing programs offered by the Office of Research Development & Communication
    • Understand the proposal development and submission process to mentor faculty through the engagement process with the Office of Research Services
    • Oversight of the Schools designated safety and compliance officer (when hired)
    • Ensure compliance to all relevant university regulations, and state and federal laws
  • Facilitate the smooth on-boarding of faculty relative to their research program;
  • Chair the School Research Committee. This committee provides direction for the Schools research and innovation enterprise and other areas such as providing professional students the opportunity to engage in research, and the Schools research day
  • Serve on the TTU Research Advisory Committee and other committees as appropriate


Required Qualifications
Appropriate terminal degree for the position; in addition, progressively responsible managerial experience.

Preferred Qualifications
A Ph.D. is required. A D.V.M. degree is preferred but not required. Experience acquiring extramural support for research is required, and evidence of federally funded research is strongly preferred. Experience productively interacting with federal granting agencies and industrial sponsors is preferred.

Evidence of a successful track record of leading and contributing to successful teams is required.
