POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of the Law School's Legal Writing Program oversees the operations and administrative functions for the Law School's first-year, upper-level legal writing courses, and LLM courses, and teaches in the 1L Legal Writing program, and oversees all adjunct faculty teaching legal writing courses at the law school. The Director is involved in every aspect of the Legal Writing program. Every J.D. student is required to take a 3-credit legal research and writing course in the first year, and most students take an advanced legal writing course in the upper level. The Director reports to and works closely with the Faculty Director of Legal Writing and Lawyering Skills, and also collaborates closely with the Assistant Dean for Curriculum Planning and the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.



RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Director of the Legal Writing Program is responsible for overseeing the curriculum and the faculty teaching in the 1L Legal Writing program. This includes:

    • Developing course materials and teaching resources;

    • Hiring, training, supporting, and evaluating adjunct instructors;

    • Overseeing student teaching assistants;

    • Scheduling assessments and section meetings;

    • Coordinating with the 1L doctrinal faculty and the research librarians teaching in the program;

    • Managing processes for grading.



In addition, the Director assists the Faculty Director in building and managing the upper-level legal writing curriculum, including the legal writing program for LLM students.



The Director will work to solve student issues and answer instructor questions and is expected to work with the Office of Student Affairs to oversee accommodations and student problems.



QUALIFICATIONS:

    • J.D. required

    • Minimum five (5) years of legal experience preferred.

    • Minimum three (3) years of experience teaching legal writing preferred.

    • Ability to work independently, make appropriate decisions, and exercise sound judgment.

    • Ability to collaborate across departments, and with students and faculty.

    • Successful candidates should have a knowledge of and commitment to the goals of Jesuit Education.
